Biblical Meditation 2 Week Challenge Guide to Be on the Word

You may have noticed we are living in a world with such an abundance of the Word. The amount of Christian literature available physically and digitally is mind-wrenchingly abundant. This abundance of spiritual resources doesn’t mean that it helps us grow in our spiritual walk. Let’s not be deceived. Then there are the troubles and deceptions from the world itself that keep us away from the Word. We are living in a heavily worry-focused society. On the other hand, the generation we live in is on the lower end of attention deficit. Then there is a lack of consistent teaching on biblical meditation complicated by confusion and misunderstandings on the topic. All these factors are slowing and preventing us from engaging with the Word of God.

Psa 119:97 מ (Mem)O how I love your law!All day long I meditate on it.

The above verse is a paradigm verse on Biblical meditation. Biblical meditation has to come out of our love for the law. How much do we love the law of God? We might think meditating on the word all day is an impossible task. It doesn’t have to be if we love it from our hearts. There are situations and needs we can put our full day’s worth of attention to when it matters to us. In order for us to get into meditating upon the Word, we should also make it a point to love it wholeheartedly. Not out of obligation, not out of fear, not to please man.

Again we see it in the greatest Commandment. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37) Jesus puts the love in its proper place. He states it needs to be from the heart with the involvement of the whole person – intellect, willingness, emotions, strength and thoughtfulness. In John 14 and 15 we get a direct equation from Jesus that connects love and obedience. He says

If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. John 14:15
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love. John 15: 10

So we know our mark of love is directly proportional to obedience to the Word. Likewise, we can grow in our love by obeying the Word. In all this, meditation is our friend and guide. When we love the Lord, then we will love His Word heartfully, and our lives will show it. We can also understand that when we are obeying the Word intentionally, we are also meditating on the Word.

What is Biblical Meditation?

Biblical Meditation is heartfully and lovingly seeking ways to be in the Word and His authority. It could include reading, rereading, memorizing, praying, thinking, considering, and obeying the Word. It can include any other ways the Holy Spirit leads us to be in the Word. The most important part of biblical meditation is to enjoy God’s Word and lovingly obey it wherever God’s Word leads you in your corresponding situations of life.
