There is no account in the Bible that is the ground for so much debate, discussion, and disbelief than the Genesis account of Creation. Scientists and academics have done their fairest share to confuse the minds of people by introducing all kinds of ideas and theories that go against this account. Even among Bible-believing Christians, there is a certain amount of division over time and ages through this account. It is very rare to see a church or family regularly and confidently do a study on the Creation account. In that regard, we should not hesitate to acknowledge that the world has been successful in influencing Christians in a negative way in approaching the Creation account. Here I am writing a few thoughts to encourage you and your community to dive into this account of God’s Word.
Firstly, God invites you to a challenge by putting the Creation account at the beginning of the Scripture. You open the Bible and the first words you read are:
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth….
This is an attestation of divine authorship of the Scripture by having this inspired account of creation at the start itself. If it was of human authorship and a man-made idea, you would have expected this account somewhere tucked inside the Scripture, not that easily noticeable, and not in such a prominent way. God is clear; He wants you to have awe and faith when you approach His Word. Truth shines by itself, and there is no need to hide or be deceptive. So is the account of Creation we see at the first pages of Bible.
We should not be and we can’t approach this Word with a demand for proof. The scientific enterprise requires observations and repeatable acts. The creation account is unlike anything we can think of or make up. It is the act of a self-existent God who has unfathomable knowledge and power. That God does not need any substantiation from anyone. His account of creation in Genesis has everything God wants us to know succinctly, beautifully, and truthfully.
Next time, get into Genesis with a prayerful, worshipful heart and unrelenting faith. You don’t need to easily go after any tangent or pursue a fine commentary to explain what the division of days means or what different light means, or is it thousands of years or millions of years since it all began. You should also remember this account of Scripture is increasingly accepted by the scientific community because of its truth and narratives. Not that the creation account needs any outside endorsement. The God who is behind this eternal Universe does not need any proofs from outside for His existence or the creation.
After all, would we rather acknowledge a scientist or the finest theological exposition by a commentator on Creation? Or would we trust the creation narrative and the God behind its actions and words? God boldly invites us to come to His Word with a sense of wonder, adoration, and faith.
