Years ago, Thanksgiving Day was one of the most important days of my life. That was the day I got married. So much attention was given to that day for the planning and preparations that I was completely stressed out on such an important day. Looking back, I could see I put more attention on one day of the event and how it all needed to look. When I should have been focusing more on the person I was about to marry and praying earnestly for how to prepare for a new life of love and learning with an individual God blessed me with. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with preparing for the wedding day. But too often attention gets drawn to one day rather than to the most important thing. That is the marriage life itself. In the same way, what I’m about to say is the most important thing in your life. What is the true purpose of your life?
One question that bothers every human being in their lifetime is – what in the world am I here for? That question comes in different variations and various life stages, like:
- What am I to do with my life?
- Where am I heading?
- What is the meaning of life?
- What should guide my life?
It is as if someone placed a ‘purpose organ’ inside every human being. Whether someone actively believes in God, actively rebels against God, or does not believe in God, each person ponders these questions. God created a purpose-seeking tilt in every human being. God, being love and knowing how to communicate, doesn’t keep our purpose a secret or a mystery.
God’s Word is the unparalleled and clear way of direction for humans. In it are instructions, corrections, guidance, and teachings for life. Everything we need for life and eternal life is found in the Word of God. There is no other duty greater than following His commandments for us. God’s Word is the purpose manual for life.
God’s word states that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
No exception. Everyone has missed the mark. Deep in their hearts, everyone seeks meaning. That’s why universally, man is in a constant hunt for spirituality, meaning, and self-development. Because all know that something that ought to be there in them is missing and, something that they are created for is not working. Our purpose is to bring glory to God by following after Him.
Sadly, mankind’s vain effort to tackle purposelessness leads to further vanity. They create false gods who cannot fill the vacuum of the hole of despair and fear. Whatever they do to beautify their doomed life is just like decorating a tombstone. In many cases, it is like focusing on the preparations, like my wedding illustration. They are doing all the things that are pleasing them or others. But the most important thing ought to be – What does God want me to do with my life?
How can we get back to God’s intended purpose? Is a restoration possible?
Let’s get into the following verses from God’s word, which is the purpose manual. In Romans 3:24, it says:
being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; (Rom. 3:24-25 NAS)
All humans have sinned and lost the purpose for which they are created. We can do all things, but if we can’t do the one thing God has created us for, we are lost. And all of us are lost. We know it. God has prepared a way for us to make it right, to bring us back to purpose and meaning. God sent His Son, Christ Jesus, to redeem us from our utter loss and failure. Justification is a gift of God to bring us back to a life of glory.
What is happening in your life? Is it a life full of losses and despair? Or is it a life of glory and purpose because you accepted the gift of justification offered by faith in Jesus Christ?
